Independence Day 2025

Today, we honor Ukraine’s enduring fight for freedom—a struggle that continues to define the nation’s resilient spirit.
This August 24th marks Ukraine’s 34th Independence Day, and also three and a half years since Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Through air raids, blackouts, and daily loss, Ukrainians remain steadfast, united, and proud of their sovereign, democratic nation. Their courage in the face of overwhelming adversity inspires the world, a reminder that freedom is never free, and it must be protected. To everyone supporting Ukraine, your solidarity matters. Together, we honor the bravery of those defending their country and amplify the enduring spirit of freedom.
As we come together to reflect on this day, may we not only celebrate Ukrainian independence, but also share in their belief that freedom and dignity are worth defending — for Ukraine, and for us all.

Independence Day of Ukraine: History and 5 Facts

Today, we honor Ukraine’s enduring fight for freedom, independence, and just peace.
Check out the 5 Truths About Ukraine’s Independence that you and your friends need to know.
Share the truth. Stand with an independent Ukraine!

Fact #1

On August 24, 1991, Ukraine declared independence, with 92% voting YES in the subsequent referendum. Ukraine has its own constitution, elected government, national symbols, defined borders, and a rich, ancient culture.

Fact #2

Ukraine had the world’s third-largest nuclear arsenal. In 1994, under the Budapest Memorandum, Ukraine gave up its weapons in exchange for security guarantees, trusting the U.S., Russia, and U.K. to ensure its territorial integrity and economic cooperation—promises that were later broken.

Fact #3

Ukraine is a democracy. Since independence, Ukrainians have chosen their leaders through free elections and defended their democratic rights in the Orange Revolution (2004) and the Revolution of Dignity (2014), following the Revolution on Granite in 1990 just before proclaiming independence.

Fact #4

For centuries, Ukrainians have paid the ultimate price for freedom as Russia tried to erase their languages, culture, and nation. Their sacrifice keeps Ukraine alive today. Even after independence, Russia has exerted pressure, invaded in 2014, and launched a full-scale war in 2022.

Fact #5

Ukraine’s fight for freedom defends more than its borders—it is about the people who want to live on their land, in their homes, and shape their own future. This battle also upholds justice, peace, and democracy around the world.
