How United Help Ukraine’s Mental Health Projects Transform Lives

The story of Maria

After losing her husband in the war and caring for a child with a lifelong disability, Maria was overwhelmed with grief, uncertainty, and depression. Struggling to support herself and her son, she felt that she had no clear path forward. Maria received support from a mental health worker trained by PM+ (Problem Management Plus program), helping her regain emotional strength and stability. She began healing and rebuilding her life.

With renewed confidence, Maria accessed business training and resources, submitted a business plan, and is now building a sustainable future for herself and her son.

This is why our projects like PM+ are vital – they equip mental health professionals to support Ukrainians facing trauma, loss, and challenges of rebuilding their lives amid war.

PM+ is a part of UHU’s Reboot Initiative under our Medical Aid Program that helps Ukrainians recover psychologically and emotionally from the trauma of war. Certified by the World Health Organization (WHO), the project is carried out with the support of the national mental health initiative Ти як? “How Are You?”(endorsed by Ukraine’s First Lady, Олена Зеленська) and the Coordination Centre of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (Кабінет Міністрів України).

Through REBOOT, at United Help Ukraine, we strengthen community-based care by training mental health professionals and expanding access to critical support services across Ukraine.

Projects like PM⁺ are vital to helping Ukrainians cope with loss, displacement, and the lasting effects of war. Because of this support, Maria found stability, purpose, and hope for the future.

As the war is going on, psychological and emotional support is becoming more and more essential for Ukrainians. Recently, we launched training for psychologists and social workers in Vinnytsa and certified our first training group under the Problem Management Plus (PM+) initiative.
