When the Russian invasion turned Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, into a warzone, the Feldman Ecopark zoo found itself on the front lines. This animal park, which combined animal care and therapy for children with special needs, was just on the frontline. As relentless shelling escalated, the sheer bravery of the zoo staff became insufficient to protect the 5,000 animals trapped inside, including numerous dangerous predators.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the zookeepers, with the crucial help of four young volunteers, embarked on a perilous mission. They risked their lives to evacuate the animals and transport them to safety. Award-winning filmmaker Joshua Zeman’s documentary, Checkpoint Zoo, utilizes firsthand footage to capture this story of incredible compassion and sacrifice. The film serves as a powerful testament to the best of humanity, offering a beacon of light amidst the darkness of conflict.
