Today, we commemorate the anniversary of the mass deportation of the Crimean Tatars (Kirimli) from their indigenous land on the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine. In three day, on May 18-20, 1944 around 200,000 Crimean Tatars were forcibly deported to the Central Asian republics of the USSR. Nearly 8,000 of them died during the deportation and tens of thousands perished subsequently due to the harsh exile conditions.
Jamala, a Ukrainian singer with Crimean Tatar roots, talks about this tragedy and about the current illegal deportation of Ukrainians to Russia, a horrible crime that is going on right at this moment.
