On Saturday, March 11, members of the Ukrainian community gathered near the monument of Taras Shevchenko in Washington, DC. People recited their favorite poems, both in Ukrainian and translated in English, talked about Shevchenko’s life and works and about significance of the great poet to Ukrainian culture. Passersby could hear beautiful songs written on Shevchenko’s lyrics. It was a nice, sunny yet pretty cold day: the celebration continued in nearby Bier Baron Tavern with the tastiest cake in honor of Shevchenko’s 203rd birthday. The rock duo Rick and MC came from Philadelphia for the occasion and entertained us with a lively performance that included many Ukrainian songs. The event was organized by United Help Ukraine and Razom for Ukraine.
